White Cockades: An Incident of the "Forty-Five" (Version 2)

Shortly after the slaughter at Cullodden moor, Andrew Boyd, son of a wealthy landowner, frees a fugitive Scot of higher degree from a mishap, and he and his father hide him from his English pursuers in their venerable old Scottish home called Windlestrae.

Because the of the Boyds’ English roots, their neighbors suppose them to be loyal to King George, a mistake that makes their home relatively safe for their guest, but a troop of English soldiers, with a highland captive, stray to Windlestrae in the fog at night and make themselves at home there. The stage has been set for a tense domestic drama, which gradually develops into an adventure calling for quick wits, cool daring, and iron resolve. (Summary by Thomas Copeland)

    How to Be a Lady

"Preface! I never read a preface, it's so prosy" said a bright-eyed, sprightly little girl; "I want to get at the story." Her object in reading was to be amused. If she had desired to be benefited by what she read, she would have perused the Author's preface, in order to understand why he wrote the book.

The "Young Lady's Guide" was intended for a class of female , who have attained some degree of maturity of character, and who are supposed already to have entered upon a religious life. The success of that work has led the Author, for several years, to contemplate the preparation of another, for a younger class of females. Having daughters of his own, and having been many years employed in writing for the young, he hopes to be able to offer some good advice, in the following pages, in an entertaining way, for girls or misses, between the ages of eight and fifteen. His object is, to assist them in forming their characters upon the best model; that they may become well-bred, intelligent, refined, and good; and then they will be ladies, in the highest sense. This book covers substantially the same ground occupied by another work for boys, issued simultaneously with it. Some parts of both are identical; while other parts are entirely different. If it shall be the means of benefiting one immortal mind, the Author will be abundantly rewarded. (Summary from the Preface)

Poems Written During the Civil War and the Protectorate 1642-1658

The English poet John Milton supported the Parliamentarian side during the English Civil War and publicly defended the execution of King Charles I. He held the post of Secretary for Foreign Tongues in the government of Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth. The relatively few poems he wrote during this period often reference the political situation of the time.

With the assistance of an old mentor, he saves the life of a reclusive painter on the floor above him. A close friendship ensues. Byng courts Emma Denman, a beautiful heiress whose intellectual sister has disappeared, presumed drowned. His mentor, who admired the lost woman and believes her to be still alive, travels to Europe to seek her. Meanwhile, Byng fraternizes with one of the other passengers on the ship on which he arrived, an accomplished older man, named Densdeth, of questionable character. The relationships among all of these individuals constitute a mystery whose solution becomes increasingly imperative. (Summary by Thomas A. Copeland)

    Jalna

Jalna is the first book in a series of 16 novels written between 1927 and 1960 by the Canadian writer Mazo de la Roche. It has been adapted for both stage and screen, including Jalna, the 1935 film from director John Cromwell; The Whiteoaks of Jalna, a 13-part mini-series produced in 1972 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; and Jalna, a 1994 French-Canadian adaptation in 8 parts.

    Read moreShow less

A sprawling family saga that spans the century from 1854-1954, it tells the story of the Whiteoaks family of southern Ontario. Jalna is the name of their fictional manor house on the shore of Lake Ontario, named after a British garrison in the Indian city of Benares (Varanasi). It is modelled after a house in Mississauga, Canada, built in the 1850s for a retired officer of the British army, in which de la Roche lived as a child.

Billed as Canada’s answer to The Forsyth Saga, the series recounts the conflicts and romantic entanglements of the wealthy and eccentric Whiteoaks. Beginning with the establishment of Jalna in 1863, the narrative revolves around sharp-tongued Grandma Adeline Whiteoak, the 99-year-old matriarch who dominates the family, and Renny, the eldest grandson, striving to bring order the family’s internecine battles and chronic financial instability.

Considered a classic in Canadian literature, de la Roche continued to tell the family’s story through her finale in 1960, Morning at Jalna . The 16 novels do not form a sequence, and each can be read as an independent story with at least 6 prequels preceding the “first” novel, which won the inaugural Atlantic Monthly’s $10,000 Book Award when the author was 48. In addition, de la Roche was a prolific author of children’s stories, plays, short stories, and romantic fiction until her death.
